Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Dr Gurpreet Kaur got married on Thursday, July 7, 2022.
In the 21st century, when the entire world is moving ahead, Indian netizens chose to head south. Recently, they took to twitter, trolled and mocked the 48-year-old Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for tying knot with a 32-year-old doctor Gurpreet Kaur.
The youth of India seems to have keen interest in a politician’s 2nd wedding because perhaps, they fail to accept an age gap of sixteen years between the politician groom and the doctor bride; they feel it’s a clear ‘mismatched’.
Ridiculing a politician’s personal life is totally unfair as he is an equal part of the country that reserves the right to choose a life partner. Just because he is a public figure who chose to marry a woman much younger to him, the youth can’t mock his personal life. Had he failed to serve the state of Punjab as a CM, an outrage would have been acceptable and well understood but, intervening and commenting on anyone’s personal life for the sake of mocking and making it an internet gossip, is just not done.
A similar incident happened two months back, senior Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi went to Kathmandu to attend a friend’s wedding, the leader was seen partying. The netizen then took to twitter and commented on his personal life
If I may opine, politicians also have a life, or rather ‘personal life’ apart from their jobs. While the entire world has moved on, breaking all the stigmas and taboos; Indians on twitter are ranting about their views on the satirist-turned-politician’s wedding.
The ‘Generational Shift’ unfolding today is of great significance. In the 21st century, people have come a long way, away from the fear of judgements & societal status, they now do what’s best for them, and that’s where a developing nation should head.
To name a few, President Donald Trump and first lady Melania’s 24-year age difference isn’t the largest the White House had ever seen. Former U.S President John F. Kennedy, at 36 years of age, married 24 year-old Jacqueline Bouvier. The 10th US President John and his wife Julia Tyler had an age difference of 30 years.
American publisher Hugh Hefner married Crystal Harris when he was 86 and she was 26. That is a 60 year age difference. American stand-up comedian Jerry Seinfeld married Jessica Sklar when he was 45 and she was 28. The list is never-ending.
While we are breaking all the stigmas and taboos, claiming to become a developed nation soon, the thought of questioning a politician or anyone marrying a much younger partner is extremely odious and uncool.
